This first plenary session will introduce the researchers to the aims and activities the project as a whole, offer intensive opportunity for the researchers to get to know one another and each other’s research interests, as well as exploring together how narratives and artifacts are closely intertwined with the construction of indigeneity. This meeting will, in addition, provide formal and informal opportunities for the project group to concretize the agenda and activities over its full extent, including in the periods between the plenary sessions.

Friday 9/19
9:00AM: Coffee and light breakfast (Humanities 1 Building, Room 210)
9:15 – 9:30: Overview of the pilot, expectations, structure etc.
9:30 – 10:30: Introductions (structured listening exercise)
10:30 – 11:30: Concept papers from each institution (5 pages max, 10 minute concept papers, sketching out some thoughts on each of our topics, some discussion at the end
11:30 – 11:45: Coffee break
11:45 – 12:45: 3 minute presentations of student projects, discussion and debrief; videotaped
12:45 – 1:45: Lunch
1:45 – 2:45: Collaborative Learning Exercises session 1: 5 articles on the workshop theme
2:45 – 3:00: Coffee Break
3:00 – 5:00: Panel: Memories / Objects / Stories (participants TBD)
5:00 – 5:45: IGHERT website demo and exercise

9:00 -10:30: Workshop session 1: 4 student prospectuses/theses proposals (pre-circulated)—one student and one faculty assigned for each response – 20 minutes each plus some time for discussion and comment

10:45 – 12:15: Workshop session 2: 4 student prospectuses/theses proposals (pre-circulated)—one student and one faculty assigned for each response – 20 minutes each plus some time for discussion and comment

1:15 – 1:45: Clifford videotape interview with Nathaniel Deutsch
1:45 – 3:00: Collaborative learning exercise on James Clifford, Returns (book provided in advance to participants); each participant assigned one chapter for intensive preparation
